Vancity duo The Funk Hunters have blessed our ears with their long-awaited debut album, Typecast, officially released on Friday, March 23rd. I’ve seen the Funk Hunters dozens of times in different forms – featuring Chali 2na, live bands, and solo DJ sets, so I’ve become a big fan of their versatility. At one of their […]

Arriving at the tail end of Mikey Thunder’s set, the OG was spinning some ambient, downtempo tracks to get the early crowd in the zone for what’s to come. The slow, deep bass poured from the speakers like molasses, only to have Mikey’s quick cuts slice through the thickness like a samurai blade dicing a […]

As a chilly wind blew off the Bay, hundreds of people gathered at The Armory in San Francisco to see the sensational Erykah Badu. It was Valentine’s Day, and I arrived at The Armory while Thundercat was in mid-set, clad in all pink from head to toe. He was blowing minds with his intricate and […]

Forget parking in my usual spot a block away from Stubb’s. Red River felt particularly crowded this past weekend – even by Austin standards. It seemed nearly every major spot had a line streaming down the sidewalk for entry, and Stubb’s was no exception. The reason can be summed up in one word: […]

Although I was late to the opening set (Mikey Thunder/Jordan Polovina), the half that I witnessed featured mostly downtempo, soothing tracks along with some signature freestyles from Jordan. One highlight of the set was a beatbox-scratch session from the duo that really displayed the two’s musical connection. Their timing was perfect and Jordan’s lightning fast […]
