Forget ACL, Sound on Sound is injecting its imagination into the Texas festival scene. Last weekend I had a truly magical experience, completely carefree… until the event was suddenly evacuated. We’ll speak more on that later, but first up of course, is the music. The fairground was small enough to walk in 20 minutes and […]

Rocking a big sound reminiscent of a Southern Baptist choir, the expert ensemble of blasting horns and soulful singers that are The Nightowls wrap you into their charm almost immediately. Their new EP, Royal Sessions, is a vigorous display of the warm pop melodies you can expect from the band, and these Austin natives simply […]

A backbone provides the structure necessary for a body to grow, a pillar the support that a building needs to stand. Calling a white emcee from Iowa the backbone of the scene is perhaps too bold a statement but Adam Protextor has undoubtedly made himself a pillar of the Austin hip hop community. With his […]

I first saw Anya opening up for Aesop Rock two years ago, and I can still remember how her performance filled my bones and soul. She engaged the crowd in a genuine way, in one memorable moment she teased us over our shared bitterness due to failed love, and the bass in her beats drove […]

Capyac are hot off the stage from Texas’s Utopiafest! A few weeks ago they sat down to talk with me about their mythos, touring through Europe, giant demon puppets, and the people behind WAX – their smash fashion show. Potion and Big Sugz talk about their musical evolution from a genre they call Balloon-Wave to […]
Social Culture
Austin, Texas based director John Valley is producing some of the best music videos in town. Valley’s music videos are a bite sized morsels made from his proprietary blend of visually stunning dark comedy. They also have a quality about them that is erotic, emotional, and surreal. You can see his talent in his earliest […]

. At the center of the stage a disco ball casts beams of brilliant light over a crowd of adoring dancers. The light cuts out, covering Capyac in a rich blanket of darkness. The taller half of Capyac, Big Sugz, is shadow in tableau – his guitar as dark as the profile of his face. […]
