KAYTRANADA, yes all capitals, is one of the most talked about names on the electronic bass scene right now. The Montreal beat maker, whose real name is Kevin Celestin, first blew up when he put his own spin to Janet Jackson’s ‘If’, creating an upbeat and irresistibly grooving track. Like the flames of a wild fire, KAYTRANADA became the name on everyone’s lips, and is being regarded as the Next Big Thing. According to the producer himself, he’s downplayed his success, saying in an interview with i-D Magazine, that all of the attention has made him ‘overhyped’, but we definitely foresee him making plenty more rounds in the States throughout 2014. Combining the best elements of sensual R&B and downtempo bass, we can’t get enough of KAYTRANADA’s fresh sound.
Having just stepped out of the studio with rap group Mobb Deep after producing their newest single, ‘My Block’, KAYTRANADA is set to embark on a European tour this summer, which will undoubtedly raise his hype factor even more. His name has also begun popping up on a ton of festival lineups for this year, so you may be in luck. Our advice? Catch this guy in a nice, intimate setting before he ends up selling out arenas.
Although it was his first time in Dallas, the man is definitely familiar with Austin, where he played more than a dozen shows over the span of a week’s time during SXSW. Welcoming with open arms, KAYTRANADA treated our Dallas crew to a top notch and stellar performance, pulling out all the bangers, remixes and sensually old school sounds we love him for, making it a night to remember (even if he is a little hyped….).
