Returning to The Fonda Theatre for the second year in a row, London-based producer Max Cooper brought his visionary live 3D audio/visual set back to Los Angeles last month on November 14th.
Known for his mind-bending journey sets spanning multiple genres, Max Cooper—a producer, DJ, and visual artist of over 15 years—is truly one of the best in the music industry today. He orchestrates a 3D visual journey using a projector and two fabric screens, creating an absolutely mesmerizing illusion that I’ve only seen from other producers like Flying Lotus.
I brought my camera to capture the wonders of his set and was left absolutely awestruck by the beauty of what I had just witnessed. The night began with legendary experimental producer Telefon Tel Aviv, who played an hour of ambient IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) to set the mood perfectly. Max Cooper then opened his set with some of his signature, mind-bending ambient sounds. Gradually building the tempo over the next 2.5 hours, he seamlessly transitioned through drum & bass, 140bpm bass music, hip-hop, jazz, IDM, and much more—all while live VJing and creating 3D visuals in real time. The crowd was completely entranced for his entire performance, and when he concluded the three hour set after leaving everyone stunned, there was only a need for more.
