The artist known as Jean-Michel Basquiat was born on the East Side of Manhattan in New York City back in 1960. Gaining success for his art work through a local graffiti group known as SAMO, Basquiat produced creations that inspired, motivated, devastated, and most importantly, caused an impact on those peering into the art world at the time and still to this day. Many artists have imitated the shocking style made popular by Basquiat, but his work and life will always serve as a reminder of the true struggle of the underground art world.
