Last month I had the pleasure of experiencing a spontaneous night of live music that left me full and inspired. Lion’s Lair is a fairly unassuming venue in its space and overall demeanor, matching the stylings of common east Colfax dives, but what set Lion’s Lair apart on this particular night is that they played host to a larger than life songwriter Samm Bones. A grandiose mix of gritty folk and punk rock banjo, Bones is a kickass breath of fresh air. She’s talented, innovative and explosive in presence – I could picture her performing alongside Devil Makes Three as easily as NOFX. Her backstory is powerful as well – the self taught musician has been traveling for the better part of seven years, and she’s supported herself through music solely the last two years.
Checking out her merch booth at the show, there were screen-printed tees, CD’s and her autobiography, Heavy Metal Meditation, which really allowed me to dive in. Taking odd jobs and traveling out of a van, Bones has been to every corner of the US as well as a few short stints in Europe and South America, and every trial and celebration between are illustrated in the book.
It’s become rare to find such hard-working artists that rely on themselves and without hand outs, and Samm Bones is one of those musicians bringing back the meaning of DIY.
Her East Coast run starts up tonight in Boise, and the rest of her dates are listed below. Follow her through the outlets linked and keep an eye on Samm Bones!
