Yonder Mountain String Band Wows Red Rocks with Preservation Hall Jazz Band & Drive-by Truckers August 20th [Show Review]

Colorado’s Yonder Mountain String Band brought it back home with a stellar performance on the famous Red Rocks last Saturday, August 20^th. Openers Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Drive-by Truckers started the night off proper bringing us a some soulful jazz followed by a dose of solid country rock before YMSB blasted us off into a full-on sweet string soirée.

Yonder kicked off the set with “Casualty,” sliding “Pockets” gracefully in the middle of the folk ridden jam, followed by a beautiful version of “Winds of Wyoming.”

We were then blessed with a unique version of “Son of A Preacher,” when the horn section of Preservation Hall Jazz Band joined YM on stage while Allie Kral ripped her angelic voice through the soulful classic’s gospel-esque theme.

Mandolin player, Jacob “The Shredder” Jolliff, kept energy levels at all-time levels with picking that kept listeners and spectators in complete awe. Accompany that with Dave Johnston’s banjo skills, Ben Kaufmann’s bass beats, Kral’s mind blowing fiddle playing and Adam Aijala’s substantial guitar mastery and you have a band whose dexterity to run a performance and keep the musical goodness flowing breaks today’s bluegrass scene.
