Weekdays are the new black: 5 Denver music residencies that are taking over the weekends

Weekdays are the new black: 5 Denver music residencies that are taking over the weekends

Meadowlark’s Jazz Jam

Where/When: Every Monday at Meadowlark

What: Jazz/Blues

Why it’s worth checking out: It’s nice to see instruments on a stage, right? It can be hard to switch it up living in the day and age of electronic reign, but don’t ever forget jazz is one of the most important genres in music. After the house band plays a set, other local jazz musicians sit in and switch up the vibe. Coupled with the fact that there is no lineup and Denver is a hotbed for young and established musicians alike, you never know who you’ll see performing. The basement gets packed out by 9pm, so get there early.

Electronic Tuesdays

Where/When: Every Tuesday at Black Box

What: Bass music

Why it’s worth checking out: Though it’s one of the newer venues on the scene, The Black Box has satisfied Denver’s masses of bass hungry fans and continue to do a pretty good job of it. Tuesdays may seem off-kilter, but you’d swear it were a Friday as soon as you walked through the door. Left your earplugs at home? These guys always have a fully stocked jar at the bar for ya. Their monthly installment, Final Fridays, also brings in pure heaters such as their Whitebear and Birds of Paradise in June.

Past performers: Joker, Cloud-D, Epoch

 Re:Search Wednesdays

Where/When: Every Wednesday at Cervantes’ Other Side

What: Multi-genre lineup

Why it’s worth checking out: Euphonic Conceptions brings world wide, heavy weight talent from across the genre board every week, and with admission being $5, they’ve got a lot of other venues beat. Oh, and sometimes funk maestro GRiZ pops in for a set… Rumor has it he calls the green room beneath the Other Side home when he isn’t on the road.

Past performers: Bondax, Flamingosis, Capleton

STEAM

Where/When: Every Wednesday at Bar Standard

What: The best in House music

Why it’s worth checking out: For all the House heads, STEAM is the obvious choice. Big room, tech-house, progressive, electro or deep – STEAM provides. Featuring rotating local DJs, this weekly consistently brings the best and brightest from all genres of House. And it’s more than just a dance party – Ian’s provides free pizza so you can get your slice on and shake that butt at the same damn time. Oh, and there’s no cover! Top. Notch.

Past performers: The Magician, Sacha Robotti, Jax Jones, Bakermat

Motown Thursdays

Where/When: Every Thursday at Goosetown Tavern

What: Soul, R&B, Funk

Why it’s worth checking out: Motown Groove used to host this same party at Pearl’s until recently, but a change of venue doesn’t mean it’s gotten any less funky! Goosetown Tavern is packed every week with dancing bodies, and resident DJ Maladjusted and host Miggy keep the momentum going all night long. If you love soul music, trust us when we say you’ve just found a new favorite spot.

Honorable Mentions: Natural Selectah (monthly installment, not weekly) Monday Night Menagerie at Cervantes, Future Thursdays at Beta Nightclub
