It’s that time of the year again folks and this time, we have got one for the lovers of The Suwannee and small festival vibes alike! Coming to The Suwannee this weekend is the annual Purple Hatter’s Ball at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music and Arts Park. It takes place on June 2-4, 2017 in Live Oak, FL and is a major benefit to The Rachel Morningstar Foundation (501c3 Organization). The Spirit of The Suwannee Music and Arts Park consists of over 800 acres of beautiful land, trees, trails, campgrounds, and concert space in the Suwannee County of Florida and is host to some of the best music festivals in the country including Wanee Festival, Hulaween Festival, Purple Hatters Ball, Tipper and Friends and more. Every year, more and more fans come back to experience the magic that takes place in the park and are always leaving with a more refined and much more substantial music taste as well as with new friends and a greater appreciation for happiness in one’s life.
Going this year will be our photographer and long-time Suwannee-goer is Nick Bogannam who will be documenting the weekend with photo and video as well as a written account of what happened over the weekend to fill you all in on the fun in the sun we will all be having at the park this weekend.
Do you like smaller sized festivals with an emphasis on community, music, and good vibes? Purple Hatter’s Ball is the perfect festival if you answer ‘yes’ to any part of that question. In the past, Purple Hatter’s Ball has demonstrated to the Wanee People that it is dedicated to providing us with the best a festival can offer while keeping it reasonable with the amount of tickets sold so that we have plenty of room to dance, camp, and connect with our favorite artists and friends over the weekend. In the past, PHB has brought some of the best acts in the country and what I would call, “Defining Suwannee Acts”, including Perpetual Groove, Lotus, Beats Antique, Papadosio, Zach Deputy, Emancipator, The Nth Power, Greenhouse Lounge, The Heavy Pets, Roosevelt Collier, Lettuce, and more! This year, Purple Hatter’s Ball is bringing back a multi-genre defining lineup with some big sets from Perpetual Groove who had rocked the 2013 Purple Hatter’s Ball where anyone would tell you how amazing the show was and then go on to say the words, “Your Aura is Purple!!!!”, referring to the line that Perpetual Groove had said during one of their songs in the set. That brings me back to the love that introduced to me at The Suwannee years ago and I am very excited for those feels to return to me with refined exuberance this year under the Spanish Moss-ordained trees in the park.
Zach Deputy is kind of the man of the weekend because of the two sets he is playing as well as for the Disc-Golf tournament that he is hosting. He is playing on Thursday at 10:00-11:30 right before the late night set from Dubconscious, a Purple Hatters Ball Veteran. He is also playing from 6:40-8:00 on Saturday after we hear from the beloved Mama Margie for the annual ceremony to celebrate Rachel’s wrongful death that had taken place years ago. The tradition consists of releasing 23 butterflies for each year that she lived and one for her spirit that lives on. Once Zach starts, the night will be jam packed with sets from MZG, Perpetual Groove, Zoogma, and Dumpstaphunk.
During the day on Saturday and Sunday, there will be music playing at the beach at the Suwannee which is a favorite place to hangout and cool off during the day for all of The Suwannee peoples. The beach is a spot on The Suwannee River where it flows right through the park and gives us a sweet place to hangout and swim around during the day when it gets hot out, and Purple Hatter’s Ball is awesome enough to bring music out there for us which we are not always so lucky to have since it is not always hot out at The Suwannee, believe it or not! So bring your swimming suits, rafts, tubes, and water guns because the river is about to be popping this weekend.
We really cannot wait to have you all at The Suwannee and wish for you to celebrate the life that Rachel Morningstar was taken from and for that, we thank you for supporting The Rachel Morningstar Foundation by coming back and giving to this wonderful festival ran by family for family that includes every one of you!
A special 10-year Pot-Luck Celebration will take place on Sunday after the music and everyone is encouraged to bring their own dish to share with everyone and/or to donate to the Foundation. We are so excited for the weekend and cannot wait to start creating memories with you all up at The Spirit of The Suwannee Music and Arts Park this Thursday!

About The Rachel Morningstar Foundation:
The Rachel Morningstar Foundation exists to help the public understand the benefit of
guidelines for law enforcement’s use of confidential informants (CIs). Currently each
state, county, city, college campus or law enforcement agency sets their own standards,
laws or guidelines as it relates to recruiting and using CIs. The efforts of this foundation
are dedicated to the memory of Rachel Morningstar Hoffman (December 17, 1984 – May
7, 2008) a 23-year-old Florida State University graduate. She was murdered while acting
as a police informant during a drug sting that started on May 7, 2008. The first of its kind
in the U.S., Rachel’s Law , a Florida law that went into effect on July 1, 2009, established
new guidelines for law enforcement when dealing with confidential informants.
