Thrash metal is alive and well – stream the new debut from Sounds Like Words [Album Review]

A return to the ‘smart heavy’ sound indeed – with ‘MEAT’, Sounds like Words have crafted a blistering, solid collection of songs, and the end result is an intelligently polished debut.

Each song is infused with aggressive guitar leads, thick percussions and pure conviction. Sounds like Words display their sharp affinity for rapid metal riffs throughout the EP, but ‘Mulligan’ really bares its teeth, making it our overall highlight from ‘MEAT’. The track also leads into our next favorite selection, ‘Pins and Needles’ with its pounding drums and fervent rhythms it fits more like a soundtrack to a murderous chase through the woods. And then there’s ‘Waking From A Concussion’, a ravenous track worthy of a straightjacket.

‘MEAT’ has a healthy amount of thrash and speed metal for everyone to enjoy, and it’s a very solid testament to what the new band aims to produce. Being their freshman debut so far, we’re definitely digging what we’ve heard so far. Catch them in action later this month at Larimer Lounge on April 27th.
