SunSquabi Cruises through Austin on ‘Deluxe’ tour, Jason Hann Sits in on Percussion [Show Review]

The Sunsquabi boys have been on quite the roll over the last few months. The trio, made up of Chris Anderson on drums, Kevin Donohue on Guitar/Keys/Production and recent Winter addition of Josh Fairman on Bass/Synth, these Colorado cats are making huge waves in the ever bending Electro Funk Livetronica realms. April 7th marked the release of their ‘Deluxe’ EP, which if you haven’t grooved to yet, we suggest you stop what you’re doing and take a listen.

‘Deluxe’ features some gnarlified saxiness from Jam scene staple Nick Gerlach on title track ‘Dexter,’ some trumpet satisfaction from always smooth Russ Liquid and some Late Night Radio love on the soulful, synth driven ‘Cinnamon.’ The EP flows incessantly from coast to coast, the jams do not stop grooving and then entire listen surfaces thoughts such as “Dammmmmmn, what is this goodness soothing my soul?” and “Damn did Tauk, Russ Liquid and Sound Tribe have a musical SunSquabi Spawn?!”

The boys rolled through my hometown of Austin, Texas, last weekend, to play an offical String Cheese Incident after show in the Empire Control Room with support from Cloudchord, a.k.a. Derek VanScoten, a live guitarist and electronic producer who is really starting to make a name for himself in the Future Electronic production scene and of course the late night cap set from Collidoscope, originally from Austin but now makin’ Electro Funk and taking names in Colorado as well.

Sunsquabi is always a pleasure to catch live and the energy they bring writhes thick in the air as Fairman, Donohue and Anderson bring big Future flow to an bustling Austin scene that licks up every bite! Even after dancing at three nights of Cheese, my feet couldn’t stop moving. The highlight of the night and maybe even the entire weekend, is when Jason Hann, percussionist from SCI, sat in on his bongos for some Squabi jams. When Jason Hann joins the Squabtrain, you know you must be doing something All Good! Enjoy this mediocre video of the madness and make sure to catch one of SunSquabi’s final ‘Deuxe’ tour dates up in the Northeast before they support Papadosio at Red Rocks on May 6th, 2017.
