Austin has always been a musical Mecca – playing host to top-shelf artists from every corner of the country on any given weekend – but April of 2017 is going to be absolutely ridiculous. So ridiculous, I have come to think of it as an unofficial music festival: Super Secret Music Festival 2017.
Jamtronica giants Lotus will kick off the month with two nights at Emo’s—March 31 (w/ CloudChord) and April 1 (w/ Thibault), sure to be two funkin’ awesome nights. However, new tour dates have recently been announced for The Last Waltz 40 Tour, featuring the likes of Warren Haynes and Dr. John among others, and they’re passing through Austin on April 1 at Stubb’s
While The Last Waltz 40 certainly is a momentous event, the crown jewel of the month would still have to be The String Cheese Incident’s three-night run at Stubb’s from April 13 – April 15. That on its own could make one’s spring, but let’s not overlook the fact that Grateful Dead godfather Bob Weir has a two night run with ACL Live at The Moody Theatre on April 15 and 16. Let us also mention that Livetronica favorites Sunsquabi announced a late night set at Empire Control Room & Garage April 15th, so after Cheese or Weir, head to Empire to boogie away the rest of the night. Choices must be made. Night three of String Cheese or night one of Bob Weir – what’s a ‘head to do?
Stubb’s will carry the torch up to May, hosting the technical beast of a band Umphrey’s McGee on everyone’s favorite holiday—April 20. And lastly, Phish off-shoot Trey Anastasio Band on April 29 – the same night, ironically enough, as Austin’s own Phish tribute, A Live One, plays The Mohawk.
It’s as if the Festival gods granted us a taste of summer in the springtime. So much to see, so little time. And money. But hey, people get “miracled in” to shows all the time, right? So snatch up as many tickets as you can, pitch a tent outside of Stubb’s and prepare for Super Secret Music Festival – the prelude to what is shaping up to be a hell of a festival season!
