Heralded as one of Dallas’ electronic sweet spots for over a decade, the Lizard Lounge was in full effect on Friday night when Minnesota, real name Christian Bauhofer, dropped in for a night during his Collective Identity tour. His diverse production style defies classification, and puts a new standard on the electronic scene as a whole. Branching beyond the overused formula that has now become synonymous with dubstep, Minnesota is a breath of originality that can sometimes be hard to find. Supporting him in Dallas this night was local favorite Blake Hansen, aka SuperVision, who is apart of the Pretty Lights Music family. Blake’s sampling of classic hip-hop records combined with his glitch-hop productions turn his sets into groove-able dance parties that are impossible to stand still through; these two together made for a particularly memorable experience.
Running his decks like a mad man and bobbing his head energetically, Minnesota dropped each tentatively selected track like a bomb, throwing the crowd into a frenzy for the duration of his set. The producer gave us a taste of just how varied his musical interests are, by playing hip-hop, glitch, as well as a gem or two from his very ambient beginnings. The best way to categorize Minnesota? Bass music. His remix of ‘When I Hit The Club’ slowed the crowd down but kept a sexy vibe, as Dallas local DJ Titan, Gilbert Najera, closed out the remainder of the night.
No stranger to the stage at Lizard Lounge,SuperVision already had the crowd packed into the main room as he started to set up equipment for his set. Dallas has a lot of love for this producer, and he shares it right back. Coming out to perform alongside SuperVision was another Dallas favorite, rapper Jay Fresh.
